Cell-Fuel Synergy: Fuel Your Mitochondrial Energy At The Source

Supporting the Source of Your Energy

When we talk about having more energy, we usually think about feeling more awake, getting through a busy afternoon or having enough stamina for a workout. Yet, there is a more basic and central aspect to energy production: the energy being produced inside your cells every second of every day.

Virtually everything your body does, and all of its functions, depend on a continuous supply of cellular energy. At the centre of this process are your mitochondria.

Like cellular furnaces, mitochondria “burn” nutrients using oxygen to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate) — the usable form of energy that powers your cells.

Hence, there are few aspects of health that are more important to address than supporting healthy mitochondria, particularly as our chronological age progresses.

Five Powerful Nutrients. One Comprehensive Formula.

Rather than relying on caffeine or other stimulants for a temporary boost, Cell-Fuel Synergy provides five complementary nutrients selected for their direct and supportive roles in mitochondrial function, energy metabolism and antioxidant protection.

1) Micro-PQQ®: Uniquely Supporting Mitochondria by Creating More of Them

One of the most interesting nutrients in Cell-Fuel Synergy is Micro- PQQ® (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone).

PQQ has attracted considerable scientific interest because of its relationship with mitochondrial function and a process known as mitochondrial biogenesis. This is the natural way in which new mitochondria are formed in your cells.

Yet, like furnaces, generating energy through the mitochondria produces “heat”, i.e. oxidative stress. If the “sparks or the flames” get out of control, it will burn/damage the surroundings. Mitochondria use antioxidants to control the heat and sparks being generated, and keep things running cool.

On site, in the mitochondria, PQQ is an exceptionally effective antioxidant and free-radical shield. This has direct protective implications, for example, in tissues like our brain and nervous system. The high fat content of these tissues, along with their direct dependence on deriving energy through the mitochondria, means they need a lot of antioxidant shielding. PQQ fills this role perfectly, and research is showing big promise for its protective neurological effects. [1]

Cell-Fuel Synergy goes a step further by using a timed-release form of PQQ called Micro-PQQ®. This unique form is designed to provide sustained blood levels for up to nine hours, instead of falling off after only two.

2 & 3) Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) & Alpha Lipoic Acid(ALA) — A One-Two Punch For Fueling the Mitochondria & Helping It Run

Illustration showing how Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) supports mitochondrial fuel metabolism while Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) provides antioxidant protection.

Before energy can be produced, mitochondria need fuel. Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is a modified form of L-carnitine that helps shuttle fat into the mitochondria to be burned. Remember that fat provides more than double the amount of energy of either carbohydrate or protein.

Further, the acetyl group helps ALCAR get across the blood brain barrier, and can also be used by the body in producing two important compounds: Acetylcholine - so critical for memory, learning and focus, and Acetyl-CoA - an absolutely critical middle player in mitochondrial energy cycles.

This helps to explain why ALCAR is so brain-energizing…but there is a catch!

When ALCAR revs up the engine in the brain, it also turns up oxidative stress, i.e. free radicals. And this is where Alpha Lipoic Acid is the perfect companion. Being both fat & water soluble, ALA is the ultimate “free-radical mop”.This combo yields the best of both worlds, energizing the brain and nervous system, while stamping out oxidative sparks.

Yet, ALA also participates directly in organizing and breaking down incoming fuel sources from glucose, fats, and amino acids so they all get properly utilized, and produce the necessary intermediates and cofactors to “crank & spin” all the mitochondrial energy cycles.

4) CoQ10 — Literally Part of the Machinery in Cellular Energy Production

Regarding energy cycles in the mitochondria, there is one, (called the Electron Transport Chain -ETC), which produces the lion’s share of energy. CoQ10 is located along different stations in this chain, and is literally part of what moves things along…it is not optional! If it’s not present, the ETC grinds to a halt. This is why it is included in the Cell-Fuel Synergy formula.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is naturally produced in the body, and is especially concentrated in tissues with high energy requirements…like the heart, adrenals and liver. At least it is supposed to be! Unfortunately many of us are low in this critical nutrient. (Supplementing CoQ10 is especially important if you are on cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, which inhibit its production.)

5) NAC — Master the Body's Antioxidant Defences

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) is a precursor for the body’s Master Antioxidant: Glutathione. Accordingly, NAC is helpful in all bodily functions that naturally involve high levels of oxidative stress. This includes energy production, liver detoxification, immune function, lung function, or virtually any tissue that is undergoing inflammatory stress. Glutathione plays such a central role in how the body naturally functions that when NAC increases its levels, it can act as  a pivotal nutrient in offsetting oxidative stress and facilitating energy production.

Cellular energy matters throughout life, yet mitochondrial health can become an especially important nutritional consideration as we age. There is obvious appeal for all active adults, individuals dealing with fatigue, and anyone looking beyond stimulants for a more foundational approach to nutritional energy support.
